The Definition of Art

art

Many people have different reactions to art, and the reason for this is largely a matter of personal preference. While one person might think a piece of art is beautiful, another may hate it, and yet another may not feel any particular emotion at all. Often, a person’s response to art is highly personal, and they may have a different idea of what art should be than the person who has purchased it or created it. However, one important thing to remember about art is that it can stir feelings in anyone.

Art is a human endeavor to express an idea, emotion, or world view. It is a human activity, which expresses an ideal, and often reflects a culture’s economic substrates in design. Art transmits cultural values across time and space, and its function can change over time. It can also serve as an expression of a person’s personal and spiritual experience. But no matter the purpose of an art work, it must be remembered that its definition is a matter of subjective opinion, and many historians may disagree.

The seven major forms of art are painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and cinema. These seven areas are broadly defined, but there are exceptions to this rule. While each of these fields has their own distinctive qualities, many types of art have similarities. While many of these works are often considered works of art, some of them are categorized as “fine” or “commercial” and may be dissimilar from one another. While the definition of art differs between cultures and countries, there are some fundamental elements that are universally recognized.
