Basic Process for Oil Painting

There is no better way to create an masterpiece of art than to learn how to paint with the art of painting. This art form involves a careful examination of color values, tones, hues, textures, and light. When you learn to paint in this fashion, you will soon find that your art becomes more vibrant and creative.

Art of painting is essentially the process of applying pigment, paint, or any other medium to a flat surface. The primary medium is usually oil, with a range of acrylic paints available. However, other supplies, including airbrushing, knives, sponges and even sponges can also be used. You may choose to paint with only acrylic paints; others may prefer to paint using only oil paints, using brushes, or even paper and pencils. No matter what you decide to do, however, you must start with the basics and build your way up to more advanced techniques.

Priming: Before anything else, a layer of primer needs to be applied on the surface of the canvas or painting in order to ensure that any dirt, dust, or grime does not affect the appearance of the final painting. You may use either mineral spirit or turpentine to prime your work. Both of these options are available from hardware stores and art stores. If you are going to be painting in the winter months, you may also want to consider applying some talcum powder to help seal the paint and make it easier to clean the surface afterward.

A medium to hard paste is applied to the surface of the canvas. The most commonly used type of painting medium is acrylic paint, which is often sold in cans or bottles shaped like cans. Other types of mediums include oil paints and water paints. When painting with acrylics, the brush is dipped into the paint and squeezed until the paint comes out of the brush. After that, the artist wipes off the excess paint with another brush.

Oil paints: An oil paint container is filled with the pigments that will be painted with the painting medium. There are different kinds of oil paints that are available, such as acrylic and linseed oil paints. Other types of pigments include black, gold, copper, bronze, silk, sand, tungsten, glass, and gemstones. With oil paints, you apply them by squirting the pigment into the container and rubbing the pigments into the canvas.

Tinted pigments: These are a type of medium that provides more control over the colors and shades of an oil painting. Two-sided tinted pigments are applied in thick layers. On one side of the container, the pigment is colored with the tint, while on the other side, the container is painted with a color. When the second layer is ready, the container is wiped and the painting process repeated. Tinted pigments can provide vibrant colors and complex textures.
