What Is a Book?

A book is a form of communication that allows people to transmit ideas and information over long distances. It is a portable object that can be read by a person while standing or sitting. Whether it is written in clay, skin or paper, a book can tell stories that help people understand the world around them. Books are important to every literate society. They are used for reading, education and entertainment. The definition of a book has changed over time, as technology has developed new ways of delivering information and story telling. In the future, the book form will likely change again as writers and readers move toward shorter textual expressions.

The first step in creating a book is for an author to write a manuscript. This is a rough draft of the book that has not been edited. After the author has finished writing the manuscript, it is sent to a publisher, or company that makes and sells books. The publisher works with the author to edit the manuscript and make sure it is clear and easy to read. Then the manuscript is sent to a designer, who arranges the text and pictures on the pages. The designer creates the cover for the book as well. The designed book is then put on printing plates. The printing plates are then put on a printing press, which prints the books. The printed books are then bound together and sent out to be sold.

A good book draws the reader in to the plot and the characters. The story should compels the reader to turn the next page. If you are really enjoying a book, then you will not be able to put it down. You might have to stop eating or drinking, but you will not be able to resist reading one more chapter. A good book will also have a table of contents that outlines the chapters of the book in a logical order. The table of contents is usually placed at the front of the book, after the title page. It is also common for a book to have a prologue, which is a short introduction to the main idea of the book.

A person can react to a book in many different ways. Some people will like it more than others, depending on the genre and the subject matter. Others will not enjoy it, either because of the subject or because of the way it is written. A reader’s reaction to a book can be influenced by how it is written, how it is presented and by the reactions of other readers to the same text.
