The Study of Books
A book is a literary platform and a means of communication that consists of pages glued or sewn together along one side and bound in covers. A book may be a whole collection of writings, like the Iliad or the Bible, or a single text in a different form, such as an encyclopedia. A book is also a set of instructions for a particular activity, such as how to knit or cook.Book scholars, textual and cultural historians and art historians use the study of books to understand a variety of issues including how forms of texts change over time, how readers interact with them and how these interactions affect meaning. The study of books incorporates the disciplines of textual criticism, codicology, bibliography, palaeography, art history and social history. The study of the book is a vital part of our culture and our daily lives. It provides us with a window to the past and helps us understand the present and future. It is not merely a literary subject but one that also deals with the social and political economy of the book.Books have been produced in a wide range of formats and materials over the centuries from tortoise shells and deer bones, to long scrolls, parchment (made from thin animal skin first used by the Egyptians) and vellum, bamboo and silk in East Asia, and palm leaf manuscripts in South America and India. The development of the book as an industrial product depended on a series of inventions. The definition of what makes a book is changing, as is the way in which people interact with them. The rise of ebooks and digital platforms has prompted a re-evaluation of how and why we read books, how they are presented to us and how the medium itself influences our perceptions of the words and ideas in them.Books can be classified in various ways, for example they can be categorized by subject or by their author or publisher. They can also be classified by the way in which they are written, for example how a non-fiction book is divided into chapters or sections. Many books have a table of contents and an index that help the reader find the information they need, but these often take the text out of context. A good index can save the reader a lot of time, but they can’t replace reading the book itself. A book’s title page gives the reader an idea of what it contains and the copyright notice and publisher details can help speed up research by eliminating unnecessary searches. Having a clear and well-organized table of contents is also important. It enables the reader to locate information quickly and allows the user to understand the structure of the book. This is particularly useful for books with a large number of chapters that may have similar topics or sub-topics.
